SPECIAL PROGRAMS at HISD
Gifted and Talented -The state's goal for G/T students is to ensure that those students who participate in G/T services demonstrate skills in self-directed learning, thinking, research, and communication. G/T students develop innovative products and sophisticated performances that reflect individuality and creativity and are targeted to an audience outside the classroom.
Dyslexia – The research on dyslexia treatment clearly shows that dyslexic kids need special kinds of instruction in terms of both content and method. HISD Staff strives to provide instruction that meets these needs.
Bullying Prevention – Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn. The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts. There are a number of things school staff can do to make schools safer and prevent bullying
English as a Second Language – As children from foreign countries continue to immigrate to the United States and enroll in schools, the number of students whose native language is not English continues to grow. Programs to address the language needs of these students can vary (1) English Language Learners (ELL) programs, (2) English as a Second Language (ESL) or (3) English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
Response to Intervention- RTI – is an approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs. The process begins with high-quality instruction and universal screening of all children in the general education classroom.
Credit by Examination – The Texas Education Code allows students in primary grades to accelerate a grade level and students in secondary academic courses to earn credit for a course on the basis credit by examination.
